April 2010, Country
Holler and Swaller
Erin catches a show from one of country's most promising local acts.
With a loud greeting, the Dave Cynar Band started playing their upbeat country music. Suddenly the various groups of chatter around the room ceased and everyone's attention was focused on the stage at one end of the room. As the music surrounds the room you can see the crowd swaying to the music. The atmosphere is fun-loving at the Crazy Wing Cantina - the red and black checkered floors match perfectly with the red and mirrored walls and the black bar, and ultraviolet lights shine near the entrance while multi-colored lights shine on the stage. Tables are placed tastefully in front of the stage although there is a space for dancing. The Dave Cynar Band plays fast country music, blending well between popular songs and his own. Dave's twang and talent capture the entire crowd. His constant and enthusiastic interaction with the crowd was riveting as he managed to both sing and entertain the group. Popular songs such as "Amarillo Sky," "Big Green Tractor," and "She's Country" filled the room as couples danced and a game of pool went on. Even the two bouncers at the door were moving to the beat as they checked IDs of those coming through the door.
The Dave Cynar Band is a group of five guys, with Dave accompanied by a lead guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer and keyboard player. Considering their talent and their large group of fans, it is hard to believe that it was only about a year and a half ago that, out of the blue, they decided to give it a shot. Their determination paid off last year when they won the Colgate Country Showdown through 97.3. Seeing Dave move about the stage and sing, you would have never guessed that when he was younger his future had looked grim. "Dave was run over by a car at sixteen and the doctors told him he would probably never walk again," said Dave's brother Mike. "But he did walk again, he went on to be undefeated in kickboxing, holding the North Carolina and Virgina state titles as well as the East Coast and North American titles." As the night wears on the reluctance to leave is evident, as the fast-paced music encourages dancing and socializing. "His friends follow him everywhere," said Keith, a good friend of Dave's. This was very evident with the large amount of people mingling around the room. Another friend Brenden Rattigan said, "The turnout tonight isn't as big as it normally is." Despite that fact the turnout was amazing, and Dave did not lack in fans that night.
A suprise was given that night, as Dave's cousin Brian Evans came down from Nashville to sing two songs. The first song he sang was "Purple Rain," and it was sung beautifully and with tremendous passion. The next song was "Family Tradition" by Hank Williams, which was also sung wonderfully. Dave's cousin has amazing talent. Dave Cynar released an album on March 18, 2010, and, considering the response to his show, seems to be up and rising and getting more popular by the day. The Crazy Wing is also a great location to go see bands play and to socilaize with friends. I personally recommend the Dave Cynar Band to any fan of country music, but you will have to see them play to determine for yourselves. The Dave Cynar band will be returning to the Crazy Wing Cantina on April 17th, so if you are curious or interested come on down and watch a great band entertain!
